In the Northeastern portion of the United States lies the beautiful state of Vermont. Vermont, also known as the Green Mountain State, is best known for being America's dairy state. The state has the largest number of dairy cows in the nation, with over 135,000 dairy cows. It produces about 2.3 billion pounds of milk annually. So, it is no surprise that the state is the birthplace of some of America's favorite creamy foods like Ben & Jerrys. One might think that with so much farmland Vermont would be one of the most peaceful states to live in, but unfortunately, that could not be further from the truth. The state's citizens have been battling an intense public health crisis. Like most of the United States, Vermont is dealing with a severe Opioid crisis. In 2009 it was one of the top 10 states for rates of drug use. The survey discovered that approximately 13.73% of Vermont residents reported using illicit drugs in the previous month (when national average is 8.82%). Today the dairy state's drug use rate has gone down but remains one of the highest in the nation. Fortunately, there are several addiction treatment centers ready to help the citizens of Vermont.
